Squeeze, breathe, & repeat: My pelvic floor wakeup call
This morning, I almost stayed in bed.
Not for the usual “I’m-tired-it’s-been-a-week reasons” (although… yes, also that). But because my heart is heavy. My mind is full. And honestly, I just didn’t want to go anywhere.
But my husband gently (and firmly) nudged me out the door. “You’ll feel better if you move,” he said. “If you do something this morning for yourself.”
And – without fail – he was right.
I was personally invited by Danielle Donovan, fitness influencer, podcaster, and founder of CHEERFIT and Maia Workouts, to a semi-private pelvic floor and deep core class…and I’m not exaggerating when I say:
Mind. Blowing.
Life. Changing.
Lady. Zone. Woo-hooing.
Not Your Average Workout
This wasn’t your standard “squeeze in one more rep while silently weeping” session, nor a “please don’t let me tip over before the pose ends” workout. This class was:
- Deep breathing
- Core activation
- Mind-body connection
- Whole-body movement that actually felt good in real time
And let’s be honest – if you’ve had a child (or just sneezed too hard), you know how necessary this is. Listen, I’ve had two kids. I still pee when I sneeze. I’ve worn adult diapers to do jumping jacks. Pelvic floor strength isn’t a vanity thing – it’s a quality of life thing.
Who Is Danielle Donovan?
I can’t have a mom blog or article like this without shouting out this powerhouse.
Danielle is a mom, fitness expert, podcast host, and the founder of CHEERFIT – a movement that bridges the gap between cheerleading, motherhood, and strength training. She’s been featured in Self, Shape, Women’s Health, NBC, Fox, ABC, and SiriusXM (wow!), on top of leading national fitness campaigns, building a global community, and creating both the CHEERFIT and Maia Workout methods.
But more than that?
She gets moms. She gets our bodies. And she creates safe, empowering spaces for us to reconnect with fellow ones.
Quick Pelvic Floor Facts Every Woman Should Know
- 1 in 3 women experience pelvic floor dysfunction after childbirth (hi!)
- It’s not normal to pee when you sneeze, jump, or laugh – but it is common, and it is treatable.
- A weak pelvic floor can also affect your back, hips, and posture.
- Strengthening your deep core helps with balance, alignment, digestion, and even emotional regulation.
- You don’t have to suffer through kegels in your car. You just need the right training.
This Class Was the Maia Method
The workout was part of a specialized summer series using the Maia Method, designed to restore and strengthen the pelvic floor and deep core muscles from the inside out. It was intimate, high-touch, and truly transformative.
I didn’t just feel better afterward – I felt better during. Say what?!
I wasn’t suffering through it. I wasn’t counting the minutes. I was there, connected, and grounded – for the first time in days.
