How one simple step (or lack thereof) can change the course of your day
You open your eyes, the sun’s barely up, and before your feet even hit the floor…your phone is already in your hand.
Sound familiar?
Maybe you just meant to turn off your alarm. Maybe you told yourself you’d just peek at your notifications. But five scrolls, three texts, and one email rabbit hole later…you’re suddenly running late, frazzled, and wondering how your peaceful morning turned into a full-on sprint.
Let me tell you something that changed everything for me, particularly on days that I have to get out of the house: I stopped picking up my phone first thing in the morning.
Unless I’m pressing snooze (guilty times four) or turning off my alarm that signals my morning workout, the phone stays untouched until I’ve had time to wake up on my own terms.
And it’s made a world of difference.
Here’s Why:
1. Your brain deserves a gentle start.
Opening your eyes and diving straight into other people’s thoughts, opinions, or expectations? That’s like waking up to a fire drill. Give your mind (and your body!) a moment to stretch before you fill it with noise.
2. Work can wait.
Unless you’re a surgeon or an on-call firefighter, your inbox is not an emergency. Work emails don’t need your attention before your coffee or your Happy Juice. You deserve to feel grounded before switching into “go” mode.
3. Social media or entertainment news outlets won’t set the tone – you will.
How many likes did your daughter’s recital photos get? Who cares! Although it does make you smile to see your family, friends, and followers cheer her on from behind the scenes, that’s not the take-home message here.
You love her. You were there. You don’t need the internet’s validation to know that those moments on stage were magical.
And while we’re at it…do you really need to know which Bachelor couple broke up at 5:45 AM?
Spoiler alert: it’s probably all of them!
You’ll survive not knowing until lunchtime.
4. Your body (and eyes!) will thank you.
Early morning blue light and radiation exposure from your phone can disrupt your natural rhythms and mess with your mood. Plus, staring at a screen the moment you open your eyes? Not exactly the wake-up call your body was hoping for.
So What Can You Do Instead?

• Stretch.
• Breathe.
• Make your bed.
• Step outside for a minute.
• Journal.
• Hug your kids.
• Sip your coffee (again, or Happy Juice) in silence.
Literally anything other than scroll.
Your day starts when YOU start it…NOT your notifications.
Not the news.
Not your email.
This one tiny habit change has the power to shift your whole day. Try it tomorrow – and let your mornings belong to YOU again!
